The FDA assures that generic medications are as effective as brand-name versions, and a recent study provides evidence that patients can rely on that assurance. The research involved tracking the changes in cholesterol levels among people who switched from Lipitor to the generic atorvastatin. It was found that, on average, the study participants’’ “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) increased only 0.3% after the switch to Lipitor’s generic equivalent was made. Researchers estimated that, at the very worst, the switch to a generic could increase “bad” cholesterol (LDL) by about 6%, which would pose little increase of cardiovascular risk. In the best-case scenario, switching to a generic statin drug could reduce LDL by about 5%, which would be insignificant as well.
