TOO LATE?

It’s frustrating to find a needed medication in the medicine chest or closet only to see that is has exceeded its expiration date. This FDA-mandated time stamp represents the manufacturer’s guarantee that the drug will remain chemically stable (maintaining its full potency and safety) until the designated date. For those wondering if it’s safe to use expired drugs, there is really no certain way to know. Although on study shows that 90% of a stack of stockpiled drugs were safe to use years after their expiration dates, they were stored under ideal conditions. To maintain drug potency, store them in a cool, dry (locked) closet or cabinet. Discard any pills that become discolored, turn powdery, or have a strong odor.

Drugs such as insulin and antibiotics degrade quickly and should never be used beyond their expiration date.
