Osteoporosis patients interested in increasing their bone mineral density (BMD) may want to take notice of a new study that shows that two osteoporosis medications work better than one. In the past, combinations of osteoporosis drugs such as teriparatide (Forteo) and bisphosphonates have been studied but did not show improvements over single-drug treatments. However, more recent research involving a combination of Forteo, which stimulates bone formation, and denosumab (Prolia), which prevents bone breakdown, shows that the two drugs worked better in tandem than alone. In fact, the combination increased BMD more than any current therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis. However, more study is needed to assess long-term safety and the ability to reduce fracture risk.
This is certainly good news for those afflicted with Osteoporosis. It can cause thinning bones, which in turn can result in painful fractures. Risk factors for osteoporosis can include aging, being female, low body weight, low sex hormones or menopause, smoking, and some medications. HINT: In the study mentioned above, the combinations of Forteo and Prolia have been found to also increase the BMD of the hip and femoral neck (top of the thighbone) more than any of the drugs were able to do alone.
