Methotrexate is an important drug for treating adults with active, severe rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis who have not responded (or not responded well) to first-line therapy. This very potent medication is also used to treat children with active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. While the drug is usually given orally once a week, some patients do not respond to the drug adequately or cannot tolerate its side effects, particularly gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, and dyspepsia. However, there is good news in that the FDA has recently approved a self-injection device for the subcutaneous administration of methotrexate. Otrexup, as the single-dose, disposable, auto-injector is known, both increases bioavailability of the drug and is easier to use than syringes.
