REGAINING CONTROL

Self-catheterization provides a good means for the physically disabled to avoid bladder infections. It may also be used for some types of incontinence or for an inability to empty the bladder properly. Causes may include spinal cord injuries, nerve problems, weak bladder muscles, a blocked urethra (urine canal), as well as some types of surgery. Self-catheterization involves the temporary insertion of a tube into the bladder that allows urine to drain. Once the procedure is taught to the patient, this simple procedure can be performed nearly by anyone. It allows patients to regain control over urine flow and avoid embarrassing leakage, as well as free themselves from an indwelling catheter. Pharmacies today often have urological products available for home use.
