Statins’ Other Potential Benefits

The group of cholesterol-lowering drugs, known collectively as “statins”, work to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by inhibiting the enzyme in the liver that helps create it. In addition, statins have been found to decrease the number of free radicals in the body as well as decrease the activity of white blood cells. Due to their ability to exert this anti-inflammatory effect, statins have also been linked with a decreased risk of stroke and heart attack among people with normal cholesterol levels but higher blood levels of C-reactive protein (which is an indication of inflammation). However, statins’ primary function is to lower LDL cholesterol levels and should not be prescribed solely to treat other disorders.
